Citation Metrics

Note: Citation metrics information is available only when records on the publication list have been added from Web of Science™ Core Collection.

Citation Distribution by Year Graph: This graph shows how many citations were made each year to items in the publication list from the Web of Science Core Collection. It shows which years produced the largest number of citing articles and which years produced the smallest number.

Total Articles in Publication List: The number of items in the publication list.

Articles Used to Generate Metrics: Only articles added from Web of Science Core Collection can be used to generate citation metrics. The publication list may contain articles from other sources. This value indicates how many articles from the publication list were used to generate the metrics.

Sum of the Times Cited: The total number of citations to any of the items in the publication list from Web of Science Core Collection. The number of citing articles may be smaller than the sum of the times cited because an article may cite more than one item in the set of search results.

Average Citations per Item: The average number of citing articles for all items in the publication list from Web of Science Core Collection. It is the sum of the times cited divided by the number of articles used to generate the metrics.

h-index*: h is the number of articles greater than h that have at least h citations. For example, an h-index of 20 means that there are 20 items that have 20 citations or more.

This metric is useful because it discounts the disproportionate weight of highly cited papers or papers that have not yet been cited.

*The h-index was developed by J.E. Hirsch and published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 102 (46): 16569-16572 November 15 2005.
